Whew! Making plushies on a deadline is super crazy hard! I pushed it right up to the last hour before the contest ended, but here she is!
Background: Why Maleficent?
A few weeks back at a party I was talking to one of my friends about sewing and she randomly had the idea that a pony styled after Maleficent would be really super cool. I totally agreed! I kept thinking about it and a few days later the contest was announced - I just knew this was the perfect time to try to make her.
Why does she look that way?
She has a combination of elements from both her human and dragon forms. First, she is a bat pony. Why? Because bat ponies are cool, of course! Okay that's not the real reason, but they are cool anyway. The real reason is because they have very similar wings to her dragon wings. She has her horns because human or dragon that's something she always has. Her eyes are more based on her human eyes than pony eyes, but I kept the bat pony pupil/iris style. Her cutie mark is her magic staff - I went with a whole body cutie mark to be swirly and magical and awesome feeling (and I even blinged it out to add "magic" sparkle!). All of the green swirls and swooshes from her cutie mark to her hair represent her magic and the green fire she is always making. There are purple spiked streaks in her mane and tail to match the ones she has when she is in dragon form. The inside of her wings are purple since her tummy is purple as a dragon.
Working on the pony: I knew this would be a big project because I didn't have an adult pony pattern that I liked anymore. I had been working on one for a while, but it just wasn't right yet. A few more drafts later and I finally had a pattern I was happy with! It was time to move onto phase two: designing the eye and cutie mark! This took a day or two all by itself, I kept changing my mind about the cutie mark and just how swirly it should be. Then I embroidered it all out (Twice on one part! There was a mishap with some loose fabric getting sucked under the embroidery hoop and it was bad - haha) and got to work sewing! I made the tail and mane patterns after her body was done and stuffed by holding up drawings to her. I think this was one of the most fun parts! It was neat getting to design hair that had no limitations, I could draw anything I wanted! Her hair took almost 2 days all by itself. Then I worked on all the bits that were left: ears, horns, wings. Plushie making on a deadline is crazy because there isn't really a way to speed it up. She has a certain number of things that need to get created so the only way to speed it up is to leave parts off which isn't really very helpful because they are all important things. The last few nights before the deadline I was starting to get really worried that I wasn't going to make it even though I was working really hard on her. My husband was super awesome supportive and picked up the cooking and cleaning while I was sewing away and he didn't even tease me too much when I stayed up half the night. In the end it was worth the effort it because I made it with only an hour to spare and I am so happy about it! Hooray!
This pony is handmade by me from a pattern that I designed.
Size: She is just about 18 inches tall from foot to the tip of her horns and 10.5 inches long from nose to rump.
Materials: Minky fabric, Silky Soft ultra plush fiber, quilt batting, chenille coated wires, swarovski crystals, Sulky thread.
Maleficent is sold.
This is the best possible mlp of Maleficent that could ever exist! I love Maleficent so much, I wish I could have one of these
that is very beautiful my buddy.
This is beautiful!
ooh, this is very pretty. the design and color scheme works very well.
Amazing! I love Maleficient. This is a fantastic interpretation, and the execution looks flawless. LOVE IT. You are so great!
wow just wow
Hi Holly! Question:
Did you design the eyes yourself, and have them vectored? I only ask because these are the best eyes for Maleficent I've seen and I've been planning to make my own plush of her for my birthday. Thanks.
Thank you for the compliment! I do the whole process myself: I start with a sketch, clean it up into a vector, import that image to another software where I digitize it, and then export it to a file for my embroidery machine.
Dear Holly, my mom and I were wondering if you would consider ever making another one of these. Maleficent is my favorite and I am a huge MLP fan, so this is a dream come true plush for me.
I'm really touched that you like my plushie so much! I wasn't planning on making her again. However! I would happily accept a commission for creating another Maleficent pony. I set up a journal with some FAQs and information over here:
Commissions FAQI know this is super long, but please read it before asking me questions. It's really helpful for me because it's less time I have to spend re-answering questions and gives me more time that I get to spend on sewing and making fun stuff! Plus if your question if already answered here you get the added benefit of instant answers, which are always awesome!
What can I commission?
(Approximately 9" long from foot to foot)
(Approximately 6.5" tall from foot to eartip)
Large Mare Ponies
(Approximately 10.5" long from nose to rump)
I have not yet created an alicorn, stallion, or filly pattern.
Hi Holly! Thank you for writing back to me. Are you the same person on Etsy who has the Flutterbat pony and all of the ponies with socks and stuff and the Derpy? My mom has you favorited if that's you. If so, she can talk to you through Etsy.
wow amazing work!
How lovely! The colors are such a contrast and look incredible together.
..... Imagine if your Maleficent Pony appeared in the actual show... THAT would be awesome.
Thank you so much!
I agree that a pony/Disney crossover episode would be super awesome. This season has has a lot of strange fun stuff going on so it could be a possibility for the future - maybe we'll get one someday!
Would you be offended if I tried to make another Maleficent plushie like yours? I just wanna snuggle it so bad!
I'm flattered that you enjoy my design so much! I wouldn't be offended at all if you wanted to copy my interpretation of Maleficent as a pony for your own personal use and not to be sold. If you do display it online, I would really appreciate if you would credit me and reference back to my design.
This is the best pony I have ever seen!!!! O_O
I love maleficent and you just made her look PERFECT!
I love maleficent and you just made her look PERFECT!
Would DEFINITELY be interested in commissioning you to make another of these.
I hope to open commissions soon! I still need to finish up a few things and set up some FAQs - I will make a journal entry when I am ready to start.
10/10 would cuddle
I love this pony! Sorry I missed out on it on ebay- will you be making more? Accepting commissions ?
Thank you! I wasn't planning on making another, but I do hope to open for commissions in the near future.
do you commission for oc ponies ?
I haven't done any OC commissions yet, but it's definitely something I'd like to do in the future.
I wonder if the people who work on PR for the Maleficent movie might want to use an image of your Maleficent pony to get some hype from Bronies that might get some of that news... but on the second hoof, it's cross-branding... but on the third hoof, it's free publicity... on the fourth hoof though, I'm not sure how mainstream society actually sees Bronies.
In conclusion, this looks awesome. Your work was well worth it. Maleficent for most evil Disney villain!
Thank you. That is all.
Thank you! I would be super honored if they wanted to use my pony in any way for promotional stuff (and am equally honored that you think she would be good for it!). Unfortunately copyrights being what they are I think it is better as just my fun little fan art piece.
Wow! My favorite villain of all time into a pony?! I LOVE it!! May I ask about the selling details? I want her sooooooooo bad!
She looks fabulous! I love how you incorporated her dragon flames into her mane
